The Maigue Rivers Trust supports the work of Tom Ryan and the Mulcahy family who have repeatedly reported the ongoing discharge of alleged polluted material into the Loughmore Canal and the Barnakyle River to Limerick City and County Council since February 2021. The Barnakyle River is a tributary of the Maigue and joins the Maigue west of the Ferry Bridge in Clarina.
The Maigue Rivers Trust firmly believes it is on everyone and every business to act decisively to protect our watercourses, groundwater, soils and surrounding natural habitats from pollutants. Clean water is essential for human and environmental health as well as the industries that employ many of us. Protecting watercourses from pollutants involves enforcement of the laws that are there to deter careless or deliberate pollution. The laws must be enforced fairly across all sectors, from large companies, agencies and individuals, in order to have everyone on board. Otherwise, being unfair, or being seen to be unfair, disenfranchises people from our shared social and environmental responsibilities.
